Reading 1
The Advent wreath is a circle with no beginning and no end. It is a symbol of God’s unending love and faithfulness.
The shepherds were the first to hear
the joyful announcement of Christ’s birth—
the good news of great joy for all the people.

Upon seeing the baby Jesus, the shepherds spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed.
We have also heard this wonderful news.
We welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.

Though we have not seen Jesus, we love him;
and even though we do not see him now, we believe in him.
And we are filled with inexpressible and glorious joy.

Reading 2
That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying,“Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.

And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;

Reading 1
Why is he called the Christ, the Anointed One?
Because he has been ordained by God the Father, and anointed with the Holy Spirit, to be our chief Prophet and Teacher.
He has fully revealed to us the secret counsel and will of God concerning our redemption.
He is our only High Priest, who by the one sacrifice of his body has redeemed us, and who continually intercedes for us before the Father.
He is our eternal King, who governs us by his Word and Spirit, and who defends and preserves us in the redemption obtained for us.

Lord Jesus Christ, our deliverer,
your birth still shakes the foundations of our world.
May we wait for your return with such eagerness and hope
that we embrace without fear the labor pangs of your coming kingdom.
Come quickly Lord, Jesus!

And again Isaiah says,
“The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.” May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Call to Worship
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
You have multiplied the nation; You have increased its joy;
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;
And the government shall be upon his shoulder,
And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
-Isaiah 9:1-3;6

Reading 1
I will lead the blind by a road they do not know,
By the paths they have not known I will guide them.
I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground.
These are the things I will do and I will not forsake them.
-Isaiah 42:16

The Advent wreath is a circle with no beginning and no end.
It is a symbol of God’s unending love and faithfulness.
Its light reminds us of Jesus, the light of the world.
In him was life, and the life was the light of all people.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness did not overcome it.
Once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light.
Live as children of light.
If we walk in the light as he himself is in the light,
we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
We are all children of light and children of the day;
we are not of the night or of darkness.
Jesus said, “Everyone who believes in me
should not remain in the darkness.”
