Call to Worship
Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me,
for I take refuge in you.
I will seek refuge in the shadow of your wings
until danger passes.

God sends his faithful love and truth.
I am surrounded by lions;
I lie down among fiery beasts—
people whose teeth are spears and arrows,
whose tongues are sharp swords.

God, be exalted above the heavens;
let your glory be over the whole earth.
They prepared a net for my steps;
They dug a pit ahead of me,
but they fell into it!
My heart is confident, God, my heart is confident.
I will sing; I will sing praises.
Wake up, my soul!
Wake up, harp and lyre!
I will wake up the dawn.

I will praise you, Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to you among the nations.
For your faithful love is as high as the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches the clouds.
God, be exalted above the heavens;
let your glory be over the whole earth.

Confession
God of love and justice,
we long for peace within and peace without.
We long for harmony in our families,
for serenity in the midst of struggle.
We long for the day when our homes
will be a dwelling place for your love.

Yet we confess that we are often anxious,
we do not trust each other,
and we harbor violence.
We are not willing to take the risks
and make the sacrifices that love requires.

Look upon us with kindness and grace.
Rule in our homes and in all the world;
show us how to walk in your paths,
through the mercy of our Savior.
Amen.

Assurance
You lived in this world without God and without hope. But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.

For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us.

He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups.

Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death.

Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us.
So now you are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord.
— From Ephesians 2:12-21

Benediction
May the grace of Christ, which daily renews us,
and the love of God, which enables us to love all,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, which unites us in one body,
make us eager to obey the will of God until we meet again,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

Call to Worship
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad;
let the distant shores rejoice.
Clouds and thick darkness surround him;
righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side.
His lightning lights up the world;
the earth sees and trembles.

The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
before the Lord of all the earth.
The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
and all peoples see his glory.

For you, Lord, are the Most High over all the earth.
You are exalted far above all gods.
Let those who love the Lord hate evil,
for he guards the lives of his faithful ones
and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

Light shines on the righteous
and joy on the upright in heart.
Rejoice in the Lord, you who are righteous,
and praise his holy name.
— Psalm 97:1-6, 10-12

Confession
Lord, God of my salvation,
I cry out before you day and night.
May my prayer reach your presence;
listen to my cry.

My strength is gone and I feel like I am near to death
You have placed me in the Pit and your waves are battering me.
My friends are gone and they despise me.
I am shut in and cannot go out.

My eyes are worn out from crying.
Lord, I cry out to you all day long;
I spread out my hands to you.
I call to you for help, Lord;

Why do you reject me?
Why do you hide your face from me?
You have distanced loved one and neighbor from me;
darkness is my only friend.

How long, Lord, must I call for help
and you do not listen
or cry out to you about violence
and you do not save?
Why do you force me to look at injustice?
Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?
Oppression and violence are right in front of me.
Strife is ongoing, and conflict escalates.
This is why the law is ineffective
and justice never emerges.
For the wicked restrict the righteous;
therefore, justice comes out perverted.

Assurance
In response to Habakukk’s longing for Justice the word of God came:
I am doing something in your days that you will not believe when you hear about it.

In response to Elijah’s despair about the faithlessness of Israel the word of God came:
Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.

In response to David’s lament for idolatry and wickedness the word of God came:
The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord accepts my prayer.

We also, though we grieve the brokenness in our world and our own lives,
Remember your promises and the seal of the Holy Spirit the guarantee of our salvation.
You, Lord, are a shield around me,
my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.
Amen. Thanks be to God.

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Call to Worship
Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD
I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. The LORD is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. Who among the gods is like you, LORD? Who is like you— majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?
-Exodus 15:1, 2a, 11

Death Has Lost It’s Sting
[Youtube] [iTunes] [Spotify]

Confession
Human beings were originally created in the image of God and were furnished in mind with a true and sound knowledge of the Creator and things spiritual, in will and heart with righteousness, and in all emotions with purity; indeed, the whole human being was holy. However, rebelling against God at the devil’s instigation and by their own free will, they deprived themselves of these outstanding gifts. Rather, in their place they brought upon themselves blindness, terrible darkness, futility, and distortion of judgment in their minds; perversity, defiance, and hardness in their hearts and wills; and finally impurity in all their emotions.

Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me
[Youtube] [iTunes] [Spotify]Assurance
What do you believe concerning “the forgiveness of sins”?
I believe that God, because of Christ’s satisfaction, will no longer remember any of my sins or my sinful nature which I need to struggle against all my life. Rather, by grace God grants me the righteousness of Christ to free me forever from judgment.

How are you righteous before God?
Only by true faith in Jesus Christ. Even though my conscience accuses me of having grievously sinned against all God’s commandments, of never having kept any of them, and of still being inclined toward all evil, nevertheless, without any merit of my own, out of sheer grace, God grants and credits to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ, as if I had never sinned nor been a sinner, and as if I had been as perfectly obedient as Christ was obedient for me. All I need to do is accept this gift with a believing heart.
