Call to Worship

The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
The skies display his craftsmanship.
Day after day they continue to speak;
Night after night they make him known.
They speak without a sound or word;
Their voice is never heard.
Yet their message has gone throughout the earth,
and their words to all the world.

The instructions of the Lord are perfect— reviving the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy— making wise the simple.
The commandments of the Lord are right— bringing joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are clear— giving insight for living.
-Psalm 19:1-4,7-8

Almighty God,
we confess how hard it is to be your people.
You have called us to be the church,
to continue the mission of Jesus Christ in our lonely and confused world.

Yet we acknowledge we are more apathetic than active,
more isolated than involved, more callous than compassionate,
more obstinate than obedient, and more legalistic than loving.

Gracious Lord, have mercy upon us and forgive our sins.
Remove the obstacles preventing us
from being your family in this broken world.
Awaken our hearts to the promised gift of your indwelling Spirit.
This we pray in Jesus’ powerful name. Amen.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.
By grace you have been saved. He raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Call to Worship

I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.

He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.

Blessed is the man who makes
the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
to those who go astray after a lie!

You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;
none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them,
yet they are more than can be told.

— Psalm 40:1-5

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.
— Deuteronomy 8:11-19

Lord have mercy on us.

Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

May the grace of Christ, which daily renews us,
and the love of God, which enables us to love all,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, which unites us in one body,
make us eager to obey the will of God until we meet again,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Behold, how good and pleasant it is
when brothers dwell in unity!
— Psalm 133:1

Look around brothers and sisters!
Christ’s Church has assembled.
We are one body, with Christ as our head.
Thanks be to God that he has called us by his grace!
What is our good and right response to his grace?
With joy, it is good and right that we present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship.

— Based on Romans 12:1

Let us praise Him with loud songs of celebration!
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may now live a godly,righteous,and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.
— The Book of Common Prayer

What is your only comfort in life and in death?

That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul,
in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.
He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood,
and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.
He also watches over me in such a way
that not a hair can fall from my head
without the will of my Father in heaven;
in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.

Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit,
assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready
from now on to live for him.

Why do the nations rage

and the peoples plot in vain?

The kings of the earth take their stand,

and the rulers conspire together

against the Lord and his Anointed One:

“Let’s tear off their chains

and throw their ropes off of us.”

He who sits in the heavens laughs;

the Lord scoffs at them.

Then he speaks to them in his anger

and terrifies them in his wrath.

He says, “I have installed my king

on Zion, my holy mountain.”

I will tell of the Lord’s decree.

He said to me, “You are my Son;

today I have become your Father.

Ask of me,

and I will make the nations your inheritance

and the ends of the earth your possession.

You will break them with an iron scepter;

you will shatter them like pottery.”

So now, kings, be wise;

be warned, O rulers of the earth.

Serve the Lord with fear,

and rejoice with trembling.

Pay homage to the Son or he will be angry

and you will perish in your rebellion,

for his anger may ignite at any moment.

All who take refuge in him are happy.

— Psalm 2

Father, you tell us in your Word

that whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.

We confess that we have often relaxed our faith

and allowed ourselves to become cynical.

Our cynicism has resulted in a culture of

slander, criticism, prayerlessness, and pessimism.

How easily we’ve allowed ourselves

to crumple under the stresses of our lives.

Forgive us for our smallness of faith.

In your mercy, hear us,

for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

You did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear,

but you have received a spirit of adoption.

When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit

bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.

May our Father who makes everything holy and whole,

make you holy and whole,

put you together—spirit, soul, and body—

and keep you fit for the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

The one who called you is completely dependable.

If he said it, he’ll do it!

Peace be with you.

And also with you.
