The Younger Brother
Call to Worship
Clap your hands, all you peoples;
shout to God with loud songs of joy.
For the LORD, the Most High, is awesome,
a great king over all the earth.
God has gone up with a shout,
the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
—Psalm 47:1-2, 5-6
Confession of Sin
Lord, you said, “If you love me, you will obey what I command.”
Forgive us our shallow love and our disobedience.
Lord, you said, “You may ask for anything in my name.”
Forgive us when we think we need to solve our own problems.
Lord, you said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
We confess that our lives are often consumed by worry and anxiety.
Lord, you said, “If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.”
Forgive us our fruitless and dull lives, Lord.
Lord, you said, “You must tell everyone about me, for you have been with me.”
We confess, Lord, that we have too often been silent.
Lord, you said, “Love each other as I have loved you.”
In these and in so many other ways,
we confess our failure to keep your commands and law. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon
So then, brothers and sisters, we owe a debt but not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the flesh, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons and daughters of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD make his face to shine upon you
and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn his face toward you
and give you peace.
Peace be with you all.
And also with you.
