The Parable of the Great Banquet
Call to Worship
On this mountain, the Lord of Armies will prepare for all the peoples a feast of choice meat,
a feast with aged wine, prime cuts of choice meat, fine vintage wine.
And he will swallow up on this mountain
the covering that is cast over all peoples,
the veil that is spread over all nations.
He will swallow up death forever;
and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces
and remove his people’s disgrace
from the whole earth, for the Lord has spoken.
On that day it will be said,
“Look, this is our God;
we have waited for him, and he has saved us.
This is the Lord; we have waited for him.
Let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”
Confession of Sin
O God, whose nature it is to be generous:
we confess to you our share of the guilt
for a world of hungry families and homeless peoples.
Forgive us for our self-centered living and spending;
forgive those who blame you for their failures.
Our reluctance to give generously of our treasure and our time
reveals our fear and our lack of trust in your good commands.
Grant that both our church and our nation may hear
the cries of those who have nothing to eat and nowhere to live,
for the sake of Jesus Christ.
Assurance of Pardon
Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.
God has united you with Christ Jesus.
For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.
–1 Corinthians 1:26-30
May the blessing of God,
the giver of every good and perfect gift;
and of Christ, who summons us to service;
and of the Holy Spirit, who inspires generosity and love,
be with us all.
Peace be with you all.
And also with you.
