A War Of Loves
Call to Worship
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
Why is he called the Christ, the Anointed One?
Because he has been ordained by God the Father, and anointed with the Holy Spirit, to be our chief Prophet and Teacher.
He has fully revealed to us the secret counsel and will of God concerning our redemption.
He is our only High Priest, who by the one sacrifice of his body has redeemed us, and who continually intercedes for us before the Father.
He is our eternal King, who governs us by his Word and Spirit, and who defends and preserves us in the redemption obtained for us.
Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 31
Lord Jesus Christ, our deliverer,
your birth still shakes the foundations of our world.
May we wait for your return with such eagerness and hope
that we embrace without fear the labor pangs of your coming kingdom.
Come quickly Lord, Jesus!
And again Isaiah says,
“The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.” May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
